John Rypon states that, on Sunday 6 May last, as he was coming to the king to sue for restitution of various church ornaments and other goods, taken from the abbey by Roger Frank, who had lately intruded into the office of abbot, and his adherents, and to appear before the King's Bench in answer to a writ, Oliver Frank, Roger's brother, and Robert his kinsman, at the command of Roger and his brother Ralph, laid in wait for him at Welbeck Park, with more than forty armed men, in order to kill him, and wounded him and his servants with arrows.
