Nature of request
Writ of Henry IV to the sheriff of Leicestershire, asking him to have John Belers and James Belers junior appear before the king and council in parliament on the Monday after the feast of St Benedict next, to answer accusations against them, on pain of a penalty of £100; and if, they are not at their houses, to leave writs and these instructions with the inhabitants.By petition of parliament.
Nature of endorsement
The answer of John de Berkeley, sheriff.By virtue of this writ, I, the aforementioned sheriff, went in person to the houses of John Belers and James Belers, and because I could not find them, or either of them, in their houses, I left the royal writs addressed to the same John and James at their houses, and instructed those whom I found there to instruct them, and each of them, to appear in person before the king and his council in parliament on the day mentioned in the writs, on pain of £100, to do and receive in all things as this writ demands and requires. And I further answer that John and James are not found in my bailiwick.
