Reference
SC 8/22/1099
Date
[1402-1406]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot of Tintern.
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Tintern
Nature of request
The Abbot of Tintern, who for seven years and more in Richard II's reign, was collector of the tenth granted by the clergy in the province of Canterbury and diocese of Llandaff, states that the people from whom he was to collect this money refused to pay, about which he petitioned in various parliaments in King Richard's time, obtaining writs of supersedeas but no remedy. Despite this, the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer summoned him to render account for what he had not levied, and are now distraining him for this. He requests that he might be discharged from the levy and from the payment of the residue of the sums, considering that he has done his best, that many of the lands and tenements which are refusing to pay are in the king's hands through the minority of the heir of the Earl of March and of the heir of the Duke of Norfolk and the forfeiture of Lord Despenser and others, and that he has petitioned from parliament to parliament, both in the present king's time and in the late king's.
Nature of endorsement
The king wills that the above-mentioned abbot should have a writ of supersedeas to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to stay proceedings until the next parliament; and a remedy is to be ordained on the advice of the lords in parliament for the levy of the sum which is in arrears, as this petition mentions.
Places mentioned
Tintern, [Monmouthshire, Wales]
Wales
Province of Canterbury
Diocese of Llandaff, [Wales].
People mentioned
Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer
[Edmund de Mortimer], Earl of March
[Thomas de Mowbray], Earl of Norfolk
Lord Despenser.
Note
Dated on the guard to? 1402-3 with reference to Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.521b (no.25), or to 1406, with reference to CCR 1405-9 pp.106-7. This petition seems to be earlier than SC 8/22/1074: it mentions the minority of the heir of the Duke of Norfolk, and it does not mention the destruction of lands by the rebellion in Wales.
