King.
Occupation
Mayor of Bordeaux
Nature of request
Edmund Thorp, Mayor of Bordeaux, states that he has been deprived of his office as a result of false accusations made by Hugh Crane, his servant, and others. He requests that a proclamation be made in the present parliament that these people are to come forward to prove their intent, and, if no-one comes forward, that Hugh and the others should be considered disloyal persons, and have such a judgment as the case requires. He also requests that in that case he might publicly be declared loyal, and might have his office back for a reasonable term. He also requests an audience of the king, or of some of the lords of the council to be assigned for this, in the present parliament, to make a declaration concerning his governance, and the city, which is on the point of ruin, and the other parts overseas, so that the king can ordain a remedy for the problems there.
Nature of endorsement
The king, in the presence of the lords spiritual and temporal in this parliament, has declared Edmund Thorp, the petitioner, to be his loyal liege, notwithstanding any accusations made against him by Hugh Crane or any other, as is contained in this petition, which accusations seem to the king and lords to be false. Furthermore, the king wills that his Lieutenant to be chosen for Guyenne, when he comes to those parts, is to summon before him the parties between whom the disputes are pending there, and, when he has heard their arguments, he is to do justice to them, and he is to ordain for the office of Mayor as seems appropriate to him at his discretion.
