Name(s)
Seward; Cheddre (Cheddar), William; William
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
William Seward, alias William Cheddre (Cheddar), chaplain, states that he delivered a petition to the last parliament at Winchester, complaining at his expulsion from the church of Wotton under Edge by a John Dautre, presented to it by Richard II on the basis of a false allegation, and requesting reinstatement, on the grounds that Dautre was presented to the non-existent church of Wotton under Hedge. The reponse was given to this that the petition was to be sent to Chancery and the king's presentee called, and his title to the presentation examined. And if it was found that this was not correct, then the Chancellor, on the advice of the Treasurer and any others of the king's council whom he wished to call, was to restore the supplicant and further do what seemed right to him. This has not been done, and he requests a remedy in the present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is answered as appears from the record made on this and enrolled on the roll of parliament.
Places mentioned
Wotton under Edge, [Gloucestershire]
Winchester, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
John Dautre (Dawtrey), clerk
[Henry Wakefield], Bishop of Worcester.
Note
This petition is enrolled on the roll of the parliament on the Monday of the feast of St Faith, 1 Henry IV (1399) (Rot. Parl. vol.III, p.430a-b).The Winchester parliament was in January 1393: the petitioner must mean 'the last parliament to be held at Winchester', rather than 'the last parliament, which was held at Winchester'.
