Nature of request
Robert son of Thomas de Harton of Kelsey states that although he is illegitimate he had a legitimation and dispensation to have a benefice with cure or without, and by force of that legitimation had the church of Wootton in the diocese of Canterbury, which he, in ignorance, exchanged without permission for the church of Thornton le Moor in the diocese of Lincoln. He has been parson there for four years and more, and has sued in the court of Rome for a confirmation: which the pope has not wanted to grant, although he has sent a bull to the Bishop of London to give him collation to the benefice. Neither the bishop nor Robert will do this without the king's permission, which he requests, notwithstanding the statute of provisors.

Note
CPR 1391-6 p.391 is dated at Westminster, 4 March 1394. This petition is dated on the guard to 1394, with reference to SC 8/22/1058. A note on the guard of that petition gives a plausible explanation for the dating and relationship of the two petitions: '1059 is apparently a repetition of this a year later, but this is the one granted in 1394. Probably it was written in 1393 and held up for a year or nearly a year, and granted when the repetition came in'.
