Nature of request
John Maundour states that after he was duly appointed Archdeacon of Durham by Thomas, Bishop of Durham, and was put in possession, the king, acting on untrue representations, gave the office of archdeacon to Cardinal Pilet who was lately in England, after the death of Bishop Thomas, sending his letters patent to the Archbishop of York to do this. The court of York gave John benefit of sanctuary and put him as fully in possession of the benefice as he was during the bishop's lifetime. Notwithstanding this, the cardinal's proctors and supporters procured commissions and writs to John, Lord Nevyll to collect the fruits of the benefice for the cardinal, without any process against John in the king's court or in court Christian. He requests that the commissions and writs be revoked, and that John might be reinstated as archdeacon.
