Date
[1381-1394]
Description
Petitioners
People of the borough of Wareham.
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
The people of the borough of Wareham, tenants of the Earl of March, who is under age and in the king's wardship, state that they choose two port-reeves from amongst themselves every year, to collect the Earl's customs and rents and to account to him for them; and although these men do not receive any money of the king's, or concern themselves with anything that belongs to him, nevertheless, for the last fourteen years, they have been compelled by distraint to come to the Exchequer and make their account - even though, as they have nothing to account for, the clerks there enter an account of zero. They request a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer to cease from such demands and distraints, saving to the king the account of the searchers who are in Wareham by his patent.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Wareham, [Dorset].
People mentioned
[Roger de Mortimer], Earl of March
the Port-reeves of Wareham.
Note
Dated in a note on the guard to 1381-90, with reference to the minority of the Earl of March, and to 'prob. 1381-2' with reference to CFR 1377-83 p.313, which is dated at Westminster, 12 August 1382. The reference to fourteen years, however, suggests that the petition is more likely to date from towards the end of the minority, which lasted for more than twelve years, easily stretched to fourteen.
