Date
[c. 1387-c. 1388]
Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the realm of England.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The merchants of the realm of England state that many merchants are being harmed by an ordinance previously made in parliament, that no cloth should be put up for sale before being sealed with the seal ordained for this, because the words 'put up for sale' are interpreted in different ways; they request that the precise meaning of these words be made clear by an ordinance of the present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
How people are harmed by this is to be explained.
oth in 1353.
Note
Rot. Parl. vol. III p.254a (no. 5) edits this petition as being from 11 Richard II (1387-1388), but several of these petitions seem not to be from these years. The ordinance in question is that set up to modify the alnage of cloth in 1353.
