Nature of request
The burgesses of Dunwich state that from time immemorial they have had all the profits, such as customs and subsidies, from merchandise coming by sea to the port of their town, in aid of their farm, but that now the people of Walberswick, Southwold and Blythburgh, and the Prior of Blythburgh, are bringing various merchandise by sea to the said port, and holding their fairs and markets in the mouth of the port, taking the profits without any warrant from the king or anyone else. They request a writ to make proclamation that no-one is to hold a fair or market in the harbour or elsewhere on land within their franchises, without warrant, on pain of forfeiture of their goods; but that they are to take their goods to Dunwich for sale there, as before.

CCR 1389-92 p.228 is dated at Westminster, 12 December 1390. It makes no mention of fairs or markets however, and might not be the result of this petition.
