Description
Petitioners
Merchants of the Hanse of Almain.
Addressees
Lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The merchants of the Hanse of Almain state that although they have various franchises confirmed by the present king, they are obliged to pay tenths and fifteenths, and other subsidies, and are also obstructed in the enjoyment of other articles of their franchise. Furthermore, all the merchants of the Hanse, with their goods and merchandise throughout England, were arrested and imprisoned for a long time; and they are still under arrest, and the debts owed to them and their goods and merchandise held, as they are accused because the lords of Prussia have seized the goods of English merchants there. They are completely innocent of this, as they can prove. Therefore they request that they and their goods might be freed from arrest and that they might be able to enjoy their franchises as before; or alternatively that they might have their goods and debts, and be allowed to leave the realm under a safe-conduct.
Nature of endorsement
It is ordained and assented in parliament that the goods and merchandise which have been seized should be delivered to the complainants. As for the remainder, if they can be divided, then this is to be done, and the goods and merchandise of those from the lordship of Prussia are to be seized, and the rest delivered. If they are not divisible, then they are all to be held. In the meantime, a letter under the privy seal is to be sent to the Master of Prussia, to repay and make redress to the English merchants for the seizures and other wrongs and injuries done to them in the lordship of Prussia.
