Description
Petitioners
Canons of the church of St John of Beverley.
Addressees
King [perhaps more - petition damaged].
Nature of request
The canons of the church of St John of Beverley state that, when a dispute arose between the Archbishop of York and the canons, the king ordered both parties to appear before him, and ordered the archbishop to cease all action until the matter was decided; but that the archbishop continues to proceed against them, to the prejudice of their church. They request that they, and their vicars and ministers, might be able to approach the church freely, and stay there and do their duty, and enjoy their benefices, as they did before the dispute arose; and also that the king might appoint certain knights and other servants to stay there at the canons' expense, to keep the peace and to make sure that his ordinance is duly carried out; and also that the canons, and their vicars and ministers are not harmed by the archbishop by reason of their non-appearance before him on this occasion.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
[Alexander Neville], Archbishop of York.
Note
CPR 1385-9 p.465 is dated at Westminster, 8 March 1388, and is a response to SC 8/20/992. This petition would seem to be from a rather earlier stage in the proceedings, and was possibly the petition that led to the appointment of Robert Rous and Richard Hembrigge, as mentioned in SC 8/20/992.
