Occupation
vicar in the collegiate church of St John of Beverley; 'berefellere'; in the collegiate church of St John of Beverley; chaplain of a chantry founded in the collegiate church of St John of Beverley for the soul of Queen Isabella
Nature of request
The petitioners state that in the fourth year of the present king's reign (1380-1) a dispute arose between the Archbishop of York and the chapter of Beverley, concerning certain matters connected with the chapter, and that it was afterwards ordained by the king and his council, with the assent of the archbishop's council, that all things should remain in their current state, and that the canons, vicars and others should continue to hold their benefices, until agreement could be reached. The king then took the canons, chapter and vicars into his protection, and sent Robert Rous and Richard Hembrigge to Beverley to proclaim this, but they were prevented from doing this by a large crowd procured by the archbishop and wearing caps of his livery. He has also despoiled the vicars and others of their benefices, replacing them with his own clerics: so that the petitioners, after living for a time in the diocese of Lincoln off the alms of Richard de Ravenser, have become destitute. They request that they might be restored to their benefices, and enjoy them in peace until the case is determined in the court of Rome.
Nature of endorsement
It is agreed and assented in parliament, after full deliberation, that a commission is to be given to certain suitable people to restore the supplicants to their benefices, and to put them in full possession of them.
