Reference
SC 8/20/990
Date
[1384-1385]
Description
Petitioners
John Cherdesley, formerly Abbot of Notley.
Name(s)
Cherdesley, John
Addressees
King, council and parliament.
Occupation
Abbot of Notley
Nature of request
John Cherdesley, formerly Abbot of Notley, states that on 22 February 7 Richard II (1384), during parliament (sic), it was agreed, as part of the means of resolving the dispute between the Earl of Buckingham and the Earl of Stafford, and between the petitioner and the monks, concerning the patronage of the abbey, that, until the matter was resolved, the petitioner would receive £50 from the abbey annually, and would live outside it. He has never been able to have any of this money, and now a monk named Nicholas and others have unjustly sued to depose him, posting armed men to prevent him entering the abbey to present his defence, so that he is now deposed and ruined, and Nicholas abbot in his place. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
This is not a parliamentary bill.
Places mentioned
Notley, [Buckinghamshire].
People mentioned
John [of Gaunt], Duke of Lancaster
[William Courtenay], Archbishop of Canterbury and Chancellor of England
[Thomas of Woodstock], Earl of Buckingham
[Hugh de Stafford], Earl of Stafford
Nicholas, Abbot of Notley.
Note
Dated in a note on the guard to 1384-5. There was no parliament sitting on 22 Feb 7 Richard II (1384) and the reference is likely to be to the parliament of February-March 1383; this provides a terminus a quo for the present petition, which dates from a parliament shortly after.
