Description

Addressees

Occupation

Nature of request
The Prior of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem in England states that, although the commons in the present parliament have requested by their petition that all the money called 'responsions' in the Prior's hand is to be paid to the king for the support of the commons, all responsions from the Hospital throughout Christendom have always been paid immediately to the convent in Rhodes, to support it, and to maintain the wars against the infidel, and the hospitalities and divine services in those parts, and if they were withdrawn, the country of Rhodes, which is a frontier of Christianity against the enemies of God, would be destroyed. He therefore requests that the responsions be allowed to be paid to the convent in Rhodes.
Nature of endorsement
The king wishes that it be taken to the convent of Rhodes, in maintenance of the war there against the infidels. And if the Prior refuses to send it to that convent in the aforesaid manner, the king will ordained on this matter as seems best to him, on the advice of the lords and of his council.
