Nature of request
John, Bishop of Durham states that the bishops of Durham have from time immemorial had royal jurisdiction and lordship, and all royal rights, as earl palatine in their royal franchise between the rivers Tyne and Tees, and in Norhamshire and Bedlingtonshire. But now Michael de la Pole and Roger Fulthorp, who had certain lands and tenements, goods and chattels, within this franchise, which should be his in case of forfeiture, have been forfeited in this parliament, and a statute has been ordained to be promulgated, that their forfeitures should be to the king, both within franchise and without, which will be to the great injury to the holy body of St Cuthbert and to his franchise, and to the harm and disinheritance of his church, as he will lose his franchise and jurisdiction there. He requests a remedy that will save his franchise.
