Description

Thomas de Morle (Morley), knight.
Name(s)
de Morle (Morley), Thomas
Addressees
King and council in parliament.
Nature of request
Thomas de Morle states that William de Morle, his father, and his other ancestors, were seised continually of the office of Marshal of Ireland from time immemorial, until the time when it was ordained by Edward III's council at Guildford that everyone who held an office in Ireland should live there for the defence of the same land, or send other suitable people in his name, and because his father's lieutenant, John de Naunton, who was killed in London at this time, did not arrive, the office was seized into the king's hand; and afterwards, when by another ordinance made on this matter, all others whose possessions had been seized in this way were restored to them, the petitioner was not. He requests that he be restored to the office of Marshal, as the others have been to their offices.
Nature of endorsement
The Justiciar of Ireland, or his lieutenant there, is to be ordered to certify in Chancery, clearly and fully, as to reason why it was seized into the king's hands; and when that certification has been returned in the Chancery of England, justice is to be done to the said petitioner, in the same way as it has been done to the others whose possessions have been seized in a similar way by virtue of the aforesaid ordinance.
