Nature of request
The commons of Essex state that many people had been taking oysters from the sea off the coast of their county with instruments called 'dragges' at unseasonable times, namely between 1 May and 20 September, to the great destruction of the said oysters, since at that time and no other the oysters multiply greatly if they are not moved. Those who take the oysters at this time lose more than half of them due to the heat of the season, and also disrupt the oysters' breeding. The commons ask the king to establish by statute that no person should take oysters at this time of year, and that the Justices of Labourers should have the power to enquire into contraventions of such a statute in their sessions. People breaking the statute should be fined, and anyone pursuing such trespassers for the king should receive half the fine for their trouble.
