SC 8/19/932
Date
[c. 1379]
Description
Petitioners
Officers of the Mint in the Tower of London.
Addressees
King and all the lords and commons of his realm.
Occupation
Officers of the Mint in the Tower of London
Nature of request
The officers of the Mint in the Tower of London state, as they have often done previously without being heard, that for lack of a good ordinance, gold and silver is not being brought into the country for them, but much of what there is present is being exported, and what is left is being weakened by the deceit of clippers and for other reasons. They request good counsel and a remedy on this, warning that if this does not happen, what was once 5 s. will only be worth 4 s.
Nature of endorsement
In the schedules attached to this bill are certain depositions on the matter of this bill, made by certain people by the charge which they were given in parliament; but in conclusion nothing more was done on this matter in this parliament.
Places mentioned
Tower of London, [London]
London.
Note
Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.126a edits this petition amongst those presented in parliament in 5 Richard II (22 June 1381 - 21 June 1382), but Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.64a, from the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter 2 Richard II (1379), is so similar in wording to this petition that it seems very probable that it is the same one - especially as the response is that the king wishes to have the advice of Officers or the Mint, merchants and other learned persons on this matter. However, against the note on the endorsement that nothing further was done at this parliament is CCR 1377-81 p.193 (dated at Westminster, 6 June 1379), which states that an ordinance was made.
