Reference
SC 8/19/928
Date
[? 1382]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas of Woodstock Earl of Buckingham; Other captains.
Name(s)
Woodstock Earl of Buckingham, Thomas
Addressees
King and lords of parliament.
Nature of request
The Earl of Buckingham and other captains in the king's company who had indentures between the king and them for the last voyage in Brittany make two requests:1) They state that they received payment for half a year beforehand, which sum was paid to their soldiers before their departure; some of these soldiers have died or been captured, and they are now faced with a deduction for these, which would be ruinous for all captains and soldiers in future. They request a remedy.2) They received certain sums from the Duke to supply the men of the host, who were in distress because the term of their payment had concluded; and now they are being charged with answering for this sum, which would be harsh treatment and contrary to the agreements contained in their indentures. They request that the indentures and agreements be examined, and that reason and justice be done.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Brittany, [France].
People mentioned
[John de Montfort], Duke of Britanny.
Note
Dated on the guard to '? 1381-2': presumably because these demands of money from the earl would be being made after his return (the parliament of May 1382 seems the most likely). Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.90a-b and vol. III, pp. 93b-94a are both from the parliament held at Northampton on the Monday after All Saints, 4 Richard II (1380).
