Reginald de Grey of Ruthin states that King Edward, the great-great-grandfather of the present king, granted to Reginald de Grey, the petitioner's great-grandfather, and his heirs, the castle of Ruthin, the cantref of Dyffryn Clwyd and the lands which belonged to Wenthlian de Lacy in the same cantref and in the cantref of Englefield, to hold of the king by the service of three knights' fees as a whole service; and that he and his ancestors have held them until recently, in an inquisition before John de la Pole in the county of Flint, it was presented maliciously by certain Welshmen that Reginald de Grey, to whom these lands were given, intruded into certain lands and tenements in the cantrefs of Dyffryn Clwyd and Englefield, wrongly and by colour of his office while he was Justiciar of Chester. A process was begun on this and is still pending, which has often been debated in the king's council but is not yet decided, and by advice of the council a day has been given to Reginald in the present parliament. He asks that a final decision be given in this present parliament.
Nature of endorsement
Because the matter concerns the king's crown so closely, and he is not yet fully advised on the final conclusion of this business, a letter under the privy seal is to be sent to the Justiciar of Chester rehearsing the matter of this petition and commanding him to stay proceedings in the process until the next parliament, without doing anything, or allowing anything to be done, insofar as it is in his power, in the meantime.

Dated on the petition to '? c. 1379' Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.70a (no. 4) assigns SC 8/19/920 to the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter 2 Richard II (1379). Petitions Relating to Wales p.182 dates SC 8/113/5628, which seems to be a duplicate of this petition or nearly so, to 1379; however, he seems to think that that petition is the one edited in Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.70a (no.4).SC 8/19/920 appears to be from a slightly earlier stage in the proceedings, and its endorsement adjourns the parties to a month after Michaelmas. It is possible that this petition represents a further adjournment to the next parliament, which would be that of January 1380: but of course it may be later still.
