Nature of request

Writ of Richard II to the sheriff of Oxfordshire, stating that in his last parliament at Westminster, the master and scholars of University College had shown him that Edmund Fraunceys, citizen and grocer of London and Idonia his wife had by collusion between them and the tenants of various tenements in Oxford and its suburb and between them and the mayor and bailiffs of Oxford, before whom the case was heard, sued to disinherit the master and scholars, and because the master and scholars are too poor to prosecute their right at common law, it has been agreed to summon the parties before the council to present their case: therefore the sheriff is asked to inform Edmund and Idonia to appear there on the Monday following the feast of St Scholastica.

[On face] By petition in parliament.[On dorse] The master and scholars of the college mentioned here have appointed John Taillour, clerk, and Henry Turgeys, together and separately, to act for them in this suit.I Robert Bullok, sheriff, thus answer before the king's council.I made the return of this writ to Thomas Baret and Peter Welynton, bailiffs of the liberty of the town of Oxford, as no execution of it could be made within my bailiwick, outside the aforesaid liberty, and the same bailiffs, who have full return and execution of all writs within the same liberty, answered me in this way:We informed Edmund Fraunceys, citizen and grocer of London, and Idonia his wife, by Roger Chichestre and Edmund Tershawe, to appear on the day and place contained in this writ to show, do and receive what this writ demands and requires.On which day both the aforesaid Edmund and Idonia, by their aforesaid attorneys, according to the instruction given them, and the aforesaid Master and scholars by their aforesaid attorneys, appeared in chancery, and with their assent they were given a date at the quinzaine of Easter next in the state in which they are; on which day the aforesaid parties appeared and with their assent were given a date at the quinzaine of Trinity next in the state in which they are; on which day the aforesaid parties appeared and with their assent were given a date at the octave of Michaelmas next in the state in which they are; on which day the aforesaid Master and scholars, solemnly examined, did not pursue their writ.
