- Archbishop of York
- Nature of request
- Alexander, Archbishop of York states that in the statutes of the college of Queen's Hall (the Queen's College) in Oxford it is contained that the current Archbishop of York ought to confirm the provost of the college, and in some cases depose him, and to determine all disputes within the college which they cannot deal with themselves, and that, because of disputes of long duration, he sent his commissaries to end them, who removed the provost and several scholars. The scholars then chose a provost, who was confirmed by the archbishop. Several of the deposed scholars do not wish to obey, and are harassing the new provost in various courts, and have stolen the common seal, and the charters, muniments and statutes of the college. The archbishop has long sued before the Chancellor to have execution of his right, but because the Chancellor is very busy, he has been delayed. He requests that certain lords be assigned in the present parliament to give him execution.

Note (Additional information about the record)
- CCR 1374-7, p.400 is dated at Westminster, 18 November 1376. The commissaries it mentions are presumably those whom the archbishop says in this petition that he has sent.CPR 1377-81, p.114 is dated at Westminster, 6 January 1378. CCR 1377-81, p.42 is dated at Westminster, 10 January 1378. CPR 1377-81, p.204 is dated at Westminster, 6 April 1378. CCR 1377-81, p.258 is dated at Westminster, 26 June 1379. CPR 1377-81, p.420 is dated at Westminster, 20 October 1379. CPR 1377-81, p.470 is dated at Westminster, 7 February 1380. The dispute is evidently an ongoing one. This petition is edited in Rot. Parl. vol. III, p.69a-b (no.2), among petitions from the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter 2 Richard II (1379). However, it cannot come from this parliament, as it mentions the archbishop of St David's as chancellor, whereas (as a note on the guard points out) he left office soon after the parliament held at Gloucester on the Wednesday after the feast of St Luke, 2 Richard II (1378). Therefore it would seem to come from this parliament, or, more probably, from the parliament held at the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 1 Richard II (1377).
