Nature of request
The chancellor and scholars of Cambridge state that at the last parliament held at Gloucester the king granted them the punishment of vendors of victuals, and of false weights and measures, in default of the mayor, but that the mayor and bailiffs, and others, to cover their guilt in this regard, conspire to prevent them putting it into execution. They request that the grant be confirmed to them, with the addition that they have the power to punish the mayor and bailiffs, if they are victuallers, while they are in office, and to inquire into them; and also that the Chancellor, and his deputies and delegates, might have power to see and examine the processes begun by them, and to hear and determine them according to the laws of the land.
