Reference
SC 8/19/910
Date
[1377]
Description
Petitioners
John Charnels.
Name(s)
Charnels, John
Addressees
King's council in parliament.
Nature of request
John Charnels states that a Maud Charnels sued by writ of scire facias in Common Bench against John Marchal to recover the manors of Elmesthorpe, Bilton and Swepstone, by a machination between John Marchal and Ralph Feres to disinherit John Charnels in future; the manors still being in the king's hand. He asks that he might be called to hear Maud's suit, so that neither he nor the king might be disinherited in his absence.
Nature of endorsement
An answer has been given on the bill of the opposing party, delivered into parliament on this matter.
Places mentioned
Aylmerysthorp (Elmesthorpe), Leicestershire
Buelton (Bilton), Warwickshire
Swepstone, Leicestershire.
People mentioned
Maud Charnels
John Marchal
Ralph Feres.
Note
In Rot. Parl., vol III, p.54a (no.14), this petition is placed among the 'petitions in parliament' from 2 Richard II, taken from the originals. Specifically, the petitions on pp.50-54 are assigned to the parliament held at Gloucester on the Wednesday after the feast of St Luke, 2 Richard II (1378), while those on pp.69-70 are ascribed to the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Easter (1379). However, a note on the guard says '? 1377, cf. Close R. p.40', and CCR 1377-81, pp.40-41 is dated at Westminster, 6 November 1377. This would seem to be the response to the opposing party mentioned in the endorsement, in which case this petition would seem to belong to the parliament held at Westminster at the quinzaine of Michaelmas, 1 Richard II (1377).
