Nature of request
John, Lord Neville states that he was appointed by the King, the present king's grandfather, to guard the castle of Brest in Brittany for a certain time, after which time the Duke of Brittany arranged with him to guard it for a certain time, but he did not return with men-at-arms and archers when he said he would. Therefore Lord Neville took hostages from the French, for whom he paid 4500 marks and more, in the duke's default. He requests a remedy.

The alliance made between the king and the said duke is to be examined, and the process is to be carried forward on this, and justice done to the parties according to the tenor of those alliances and the law of the land.
