Description
Petitioners
John de Cobham, son of the Countess Marshal.
Name(s)
de Cobham, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John de Cobham states that he made the late king his heir, so that his inheritance would pass to the crown, and he would be better and more honourably maintained for life. He asks that his purpose and will be carried out: that his inheritance might go to the crown, and that he might enjoy it for life. There follows a declaration of this: this gift was made by the token of a ring, at Thorne near Sandwich, as the king was travelling to France, and was of the reversion of the manors of Weedon Hill, Pednor, Cholesbury, Haukesherde, Holte, Weedon, Drayton Beauchamp, Marsworth, Saunderton, Helsthorpe and Rolvesham in Buckinghamshire, Colveston in Norfolk, Ardington in Berkshire and Rolleston in Leicestershire. The witnesses were the Earl of March, Richard de la Vache and Master John Branketre, notary, who are dead, and John de Bukyngham, bishop of Lincoln and Guy Bryan, who are still alive. Master John Branketre was asked to draw up an instrument for this.
Nature of endorsement
[On face] For the king.[On dorse] Let the manors and the lands be shown and the form of the gift in writing; and on this justice will be done to him.The king wills that the said Bishop of Lincoln and Guy de Bryan, and any others who might know about this fact, be diligently examined, and also that John de Cobham be sworn and charged, on peril of his soul, to tell, each of them, the whole truth on the matter contained in this petition.
