Description
Petitioners
William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury.
Name(s)
de Montagu; Earl of Salisbury, William
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury states that although the king's grandfather granted to his father, William de Montagu, Earl of Salisbury, and to the heirs of his body, the castle, town and honour of Denbigh, the cantrefs of Rhos, Rhufoniog and Ceinmeirch, and the commote of Dinmael, with appurtenances in Wales, Roger de Mortimer recovered these from him, as kinsman and heir of Roger, late Earl of March, under the name of the land of Denbigh: and there was an error in the process and judgment. The judgment was executed in the twenty-eighth year of the late king's reign, but he has never received any compensation for these lands, although the king had promised him by his charter that he would. He has sued from parliament to parliament since his loss, and in the parliament held at Westminster on 8 November in the forty-sixth year of the late king's reign, his petition was endorsed that justice would be done for both parties when the heir was of age. The heir, Edmund de Mortimer, Earl of March, is now of age. He requests that the king order the record to be brought before him and his council, call Edmund and other necessary people, examine the record and charters, and ordain a remedy; and, if an error is found, he asks for the judgment to be annulled to be restored to his possessions with the issues.
Nature of endorsement
This bill, with the process arising from it in this parliament, is enrolled on the roll of this parliament.
