Description

Name(s)
Corbet; Pomeroy; Pomeray, Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
John Corbet and Henry de la Pomeroy state that Peter Corbet, John's brother, and Henry de la Pomeroy, Henry's father, whose heirs they are, in the time of Edward I sued by petition in parliament to claim the castle of Trematon and the villages of Saltash, Sutton, Tamerton, Makerton and Calstock, with the fees appertaining to them, as their right and reversion, because Roger de Vautort their kinsman, whose heirs they are, gave the castle and manors to Richard King of Almain and Earl of Cornwall and to his heirs engendered of his body, with the reversion to Roger in default of such heirs. The king ordered Roger de Brabazon and his companions to do justice to Piers and Henry, and they sued before him for a long time, but just when judgment was about to be given, Henry died, leaving his son under age and in the king's wardship, so that nothing could be done until he came of age. When he was of age they sued again, and in the York parliament it was decided that there was no reason why the king should not give them their inheritance, but Henry le Espigurnel suggested that the queen be asked if she knew of a reason. In the last parliament at Westminster her counsel could not find one, and asked if they wanted to receive money or land. Thus their right has been sinfully delayed and they have had to sue from parliament to parliament. They request justice and a remedy.

Note
The petition edited by Rot. Parl. Hac. Ined. pp.170-173 and Rot. Parl. vol. II, p.438b, no. 74 seems to be the same one, or at least to be contemporary with this one, although it is endorsed that Geoffrey Lescrope is to be sent this petition, to consider the business, and to proceed to a final determination of it, although he is not to proceed to judgment without informing the king. If this is so, it is interesting that the language of this petition would seem to imply that Edward II is still king - as is the case with several others. Rot. Parl. Hac. Ined. pp.170-173 suggests that the York parliament mentioned in this petition was the one in 12 Edward II - the May parliament of 1319. The last Westminster parliament is apparently that of November 1325.
