Hugh Sampson, merchant, burgess of Southampton.
Name(s)
Sampson, Hugh
Addressees

Nature of request
Hugh Sampson states that when he sent his two ships trading overseas, several malefactors of the power of the King of France came together in a great number in a place called La Trade near the coast of Brittany, where the ships were, in time of peace, and attacked them, carried off the ships and the wines and other goods found in them, killed the masters and mariners, and committed other felonies. The king ordered an inquisition, which was returned in Chancery, and found that various malefactors from Normandy, Brittany, Picardy, and elsewhere in the power of the King of France took the two ships and the goods found in them, which are detailed and killed the masters and mariners - for which he has had very little satisfaction or restitution made him. The king has often written letters to the King of France, under his great seal - a copy of which is sewn to this bill - to ask him to hear Hugh's complaint and to do justice and give him compensation - but with no result. He requests a suitable remedy.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio. The king is not yet minded to grant arrest.

Note
The petition summarized in Rot. Parl. Hac. Ined. p.156 and Rot. Parl. vol. II, p.435b no. 57 is from 1327 and refers to the same incident, but involving only one of the ships: suggesting that Hugh lost the other later in the same way. CCR 1327-30 pp.466-467 is dated at Dover, 29 May 1329 and CCR 1327-30 p.469 at Canterbury, 16 June 1329: by this stage arrests are being made to compensate Hugh. This would suggest that this petition dates from between 1327 and 1329, ie. c. 1328.
