Nature of request
Letters patent from Edward III to Henry de Fenton, John Daubeneye and John de Crosholm, asking them or two of them, of whom Henry is to be one, to inquire on the oath of upright and law-worthy men of Lincolnshire concerning certain tenements in Carlton near Bassingham, now in the king's hand through the death of Hugh le Despenser the younger, recovered by Thomas, formerly Abbot of Thornton against Gervase Avenel and Joan his wife on the morrow of the Purification in the tenth year of Edward II's reign, so that he can do justice to the abbot: whether Gervase and Joan were in the late king's faith at the time the writ was acquired and judgment given on it; whether the abbot was seised of the lands or not; if the escheator disseised him of the tenements at the command of Hugh le Despenser or in some other way; if Abbot Thomas or the present abbot changed his estate in them in any way; from whom and how these tenements are held; if the tenements are in the king's hand for that reason or some other; and into other articles concerning the matter.
