Nature of request
Richard, son of Richard de Mauwardyn, states that John de Mauwardyn, his grandfather, whose heir he is, held lands in Marden of lady Maud de Mortumer in free socage, and that after his death Lady Maud had these lands seised into her hand and demanded wardship from Richard, although it seems to his friends that, as he claims to hold by free socage, he does not owe this. He requests a justice to inquire into how that land should be held, and by what service, and what justice and the law of the land demand in this case.
