Description
Petitioners
Ralph son of William (Fitz William).
Name(s)
William (Fitz William), Ralph
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Ralph son of William states that John, formerly baron of Greystoke, gave the barony to Ralph, with the fees, homages and services of free men, to hold for him and his heirs of the king in chief; and when he had had full seisin of this and received the aforesaid homages, he re-enfeoffed John with the barony for life, reserving to himself the homages and services - and this was done with the king's permission. After John's death, John de Cireizy, who held of Ralph within the barony by a service which gives wardship, died, leaving an heir under age, and the escheator took the wardship into the king's hand, because of the death of John, the Baron. He requests the wardship, as John only held the barony from him for life, and John de Cireizy died in Ralph's homage.
Nature of endorsement
Because the council have inspected the fine levied in the king's court and it appears that Ralph had the barony and other tenements contained in the petition of the gift of John de Greystoke, with homages and other services of free men, to hold of the king and his heirs, and that Ralph granted the barony to John to hold for life of Ralph and his heirs, and that the fine was levied in the aforesaid form at the king's command, it is agreed by the council that a writ of Chancery is to be sent to tell the escheator to remove the king's hand from the tenements which belonged to John de Cireizy and which he took into the king's hand for the aforesaid reason.
