Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Margery de Donheved, wife of John de Donheved.
Name(s)
de Donheved, Margery
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Margery, wife of John de Donheved states that John Pecche, his wife, and twenty armed men came to her husband's house in Dunchurch one night, looking for him to kill him, and dragged her out of bed and ill-treated her, and carried off 100 s. worth of goods. On the third day after that, her husband's sister had them expelled from that land by conspiracy, and John Pecche seised of it. He asked the aid of the Earl of Arundel and of Hugh le Despenser the younger, and when the king was last at Warwick, to inquire into the death of Roger de Belers, they had her husband indicted at Warwick, among other false indictments, of the death of Oliver de Donheved, who was a common thief. Because of this, they are destroyed, and driven from their land. They request a remedy, as he is so feared in the land that they do not dare to pursue their right there.

Note
CPR 1327-30 p.51 is dated at Nottingham, 5 May 1327.CPR 1324-7 pp. 238, 250, 283, 284, 286 and 288 are various appointments of people to inquire into the death of Roger de Belers, and to arrest those concerned in it, dated between January and April 1326: so presumably the king would be at Warwick to inquire into it at this period. The petition says 'the king' not 'the late king' or 'the king your father', suggesting that this is submitted during Edward II's last year: but there would surely not be a suitable time then, nor does it seem likely that the petitioner would speak out so strongly against Arundel or Despenser if they were still powerful. Therefore I have dated it to c. 1327: possibly the pardon of CPR 1327-30 p.51 was a response. John de Pecche still seems to be exerting his influence, however, CCR 1327-30, dated 16 May 1329, is an acknowledgement from John Dunheved that he owes John Pecche, Lord of Hampton-in-Ardern, £1000.
