Date
[1323-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Richard de Stirthorp.
Name(s)
de Stirthorp, Richard
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Richard de Stirthorp states that Edmund de Impington, formerly bailiff of Gainsborough, by colour of a commission he had to seize into the king's hand the lands which belonged to John de Mowbray in the Isle of Axholme, came with force and arms to Althorpe, in the same isle, on the Wednesday after the feast of St Gregory, in the sixteenth year of the present king, and took from him a quantity of wheat and beans, causing him damages of 100 marks. Richard has sued in the king's court for a remedy, but Edmund, because he was allied to Hugh Despenser, procured false returns of sheriffs, and threatening letters from Hugh, so that he could have no justice. Richard requests that the king grant specified justices to hear and determine the trespass.
Nature of endorsement
At common law.
Places mentioned
Isle of Axholme, [Lincolnshire]
Althorpe, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned

Note
The petition is clearly delivered during the reign of Edward II, but after his sixteenth year (6 July 1322-7 July 1323). St Gregory's day is 12 March, with another feast for his ordination on 3 September: so the crime is likely to have taken place in March 1323, or possibly September 1322.CCR 1323-7, pp.99-100 is dated at Westminster, 8 May 1324.
