Description
Petitioners
Joan de West Ferles, widow of Henry son of Gilbert de West Ferles.
Name(s)
de West Ferles, Joan
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Joan, the widow of Henry son of Gilbert de West Ferles states that she brought the king's writ against Nichola, widow of Baldwin de Aldham, and demanded from her in the king's court, 24 acres of land and an acre of meadow with appurtenances in Exceat, as her right and marriage, claiming that Nichola has had entry into them only since the lease that Henry, Joan's husband, made to Thomas de Aldham. Nichola, however, claims that she holds them for term of life, of the inheritance of Francis de Aldham, that the reversion belongs to the king because of the forfeiture of Francis, who was hanged and drawn at Windsor, and that she cannot answer without him. Joan, who has often petitioned parliament on this without receiving an answer, requests that the king order the justices of the Common Bench to continue in the plea, and to do justice to the parties.
Nature of endorsement
Because the heirs of Francis de Aldham have been inherited by judgment of parliament, she is to return to the justices before whom the plea was held, and there let justice be done.
Places mentioned
Exsetes (Exceat), [Sussex]
Windsor, [Berkshire].
People mentioned
Henry [de West Ferles], late husband of the petitioner
Gilbert de West Ferles
Nichola [de Aldeham (Aldham)], widow of Baldwin de Aldham
Baldwin de Aldeham (Aldham)
Thomas de Aldeham (Aldham)
Francis de Aldeham (Aldham).
Note
CPR 1327-30, p.26, dated at Westminster, 28 February 1327, is a grant to Pancius de Controne, king's physician, of several manors which had belonged to Francis de Aldham and which were granted to him by the late king, despite the fact that Francis' heirs claim them as their inheritance, by virtue of a statute made in the present parliament. So, from the response to this petition, it would seem to date to the first parliament of Edward III.
