Reference
SC 8/17/847
Date
[c 1330-c. 1340]
Description
Petitioners
Margaret Argent of Littleton.
Name(s)
Argent, Margaret
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Margaret Argent states that when William de Walden was clerk of the crown below William de Rokingham, he came to her house at Littleton on the day of St Thomas the Apostle in the second year of the king's reign, and wrongly took 30s. from her, by force and under colour of his office. She requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
At the Common Law.
Places mentioned
Lutlington (Littleton), Middlesex.
People mentioned
William de Walden, clerk of the crown
William de Rokingham (Rockingham).
Note
St Thomas the Apostle's day, 2 Edward III is 21 December 1328: this petition must postdate that - probably by at least a year, as it does not say 'the last feast of St Thomas', but probably not by too many years, in view of the Latin endorsement. CPR 1334-8 p. 545 (22 October 1337) mentions a William de Walden receiving pontage in Maidenhithe at that time, who might be the one mentioned in the petition; CCR 1339-41, p.448 (21 February 1340) would seem to suggest that William de Rockingham was dead by then.
