Description
Petitioners
William de Westwode (Westwood) of Bagshot.
Name(s)
de Westwode (Westwood), William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William de Westwode of Bagshot states that he had a piece of stony ground ('grave') of six acres, adjoining the wood of Hugh le Despenser in Surrey. The Earl by force of his great lordship disseised William of this land, and appropriated it to him ten years ago, so that he never dared to sue for his right. This piece of land is now in the king's hand because of the earl's forfeiture. William requests that the king appoint justices to inquire into this injustice and others committed in the country by the earl, and that he might have his land back if he is found to have a right to it.
Nature of endorsement
The muniments which belonged to Hugh are to be searched for evidence on the king's behalf that might bar William from his petition. And if nothing is found, the king will ordain a remedy.
Places mentioned
Bagshot, [Surrey].
People mentioned
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester.
Note
