Reference
SC 8/17/840
Date
[1327]
Description
Petitioners
Phillip de Columbers.
Name(s)
de Columbers, Phillip
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Phillip de Columbers states that the priory of Goldcliff was founded by his ancestors, that the patronage belongs to him by right, and that he and his ancestors have always been seised of it until the last parliament, when Hugh le Despenser the son, by his lordship and by means of heavy distraints, made the prior attorn to him. He requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The inquisition of diem clausit extremum returned in Chancery after the death of his father is to be examined, to discover if anything can be found on his behalf concerning the advowson. And then the king is to be advised on this.
Places mentioned
Goldcliff, [Monmouthshire, Wales].
People mentioned
Hugh le Despenser the son.
Note
Although it is dated on the guard '?1326-7', this would seem to date from the first parliament of Edward III's reign, and so the first parliament after the fall of the Despensers. The alternative date would be during their exile, 1321-1322, but SC 8/5/245, a petition presented by Phillip de Columbers concerning Goldcliff at this time, is against the abbot of Bec Hellouin rather than Despenser.
