Description
Petitioners
James de Hotoft of East Carlton.
Name(s)
de Hotoft, James
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
James de Hotoft of East Carlton states that he and his father had jointly taken, for themselves and their heirs, an assart in the Forest of Rockingham, from John de Crokeslee and John Basset, escheators of the present king's grandfather, and it was given to them by good inquest of the country and leased at fee farm, and that they were in peaceful possession for thirteen years and more until Richard de Hotoft and the others listed in the petition, and also others unknown to them, expelled them from it, demolished the boundaries, and trampled down their corn. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at common law.

Note
Dated on guard to '? c. 1327', with reference to the escheators of the king's grandfather. These individuals do not appear in the list of escheators, but CPR 1292-1301 p.344 (Fulham, 15 April 1298) is a record of the appointment during pleasure of William Trussel, John de Crokesele and Richard de Lughteburgh to arrent the king's wastes, which can be arrented by the assize of the forest, on this side of the Trent: which might explain his involvement. John Basset is also active in the area at this time: he is appointed as collector of the fifteenth for Rutland CPR 1292-1301 p.612 (Linlithgow, 1 November 1301), and again in 1302 (CPR 1301-1307 p. 16) and for the thirtieth and twentieth in 1306 (CPR 1301-1307 p.457). On this basis, as they are escheators of the king's grandfather, and allowing for a peaceful seisin of thirteen years and more, a date to the early years of the reign of Edward III looks roughly correct.
