[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Alice de Mucheldevere, widow of Robert de Mucheldevere.
Name(s)
de Mucheldevere, Alice
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Alice, widow of Robert de Mucheldevere, states that her husband had acquired certain tenements for himself and his heirs - three carucates of land in Pitton, held in chief of the Abbess of Winchester, and two carucates of land in Laverstock, held in chief of the king, together with a forestership in Clarendon in fee - which are now in the king's hand and in the keeping of John Mautravers, because Robert was beheaded at Hereford without a judgment and without being arraigned. She requests her dower, and that Robert's heir, who is eight years old and should be in the king's keeping, might not be disinherited.
Nature of endorsement
The great men of the land are to make clear whether he was put to death as an enemy etc.
Places mentioned
Putton (Pitton), [Wiltshire]
Clarendon, [Wiltshire]
Winchester, [Hampshire]
Laverstock, [Wiltshire]
Hereford, [Herefordshire].
People mentioned
Robert de Mucheldevere late husband of the petitioner
Abbess of Our Lady of Winchester
John Mautravers (Maltravers).
Note
Dated on guard with reference to Fine Rolls and Inquisitions Post Mortem - noting that in the Inquisition Post Mortem the heir is said to be 15 in 1330, whereas in this petition he is described as being eight. It cannot however be as early as 1323, as Robert de Mucheldevere is alive in 1326 (a Fine Roll reference is given, but see also CPR 1324-1327 p. 326 (12 October 1326)). He is dead by 24 February 1327 (CPR 1327-1330 p.22).
