SC 8/17/830
Date
[c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Warden and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Cricklade.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The warden and brothers of the Hospital of St John of Cricklade state that King Henry granted them free cheminage through his forest of Braydon with horses and carts to carry coal, timber and firewood given to them or purchased, and that they have used this until Hugh Despenser, keeper of the forest, impeded them. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
The charter is to be examined in Chancery, and they are to have a writ to those who impede them, that they are to allow the brothers to have their cheminage according to the tenor of the charter.
Places mentioned
Cricklade, [Wiltshire]
Forest of Braydon, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
Henry, King of England
Hugh Despenser, Keeper of Forest of Braydon.
Note
Dated on the guard of the petition to '? 1309-1326', with reference to Hugh le Despenser's appointment as keeper of forest of Braydon on 25 May 1309 (CPR 1307-1313 p.116). PROME, Appendix of Unedited Petitions, 1307-1337, Rotuli Parliamentorum II, pp. 378-419, no. 195 confirms this dating to before the fall of the Despensers. Being a complaint about Despenser's behaviour, it is more likely that it would date from immediately after his fall, c. 1327 - which would put it in line with most of the rest of the petitions in this group, which are from the reign of Edward III. So it is dated here to c. 1327.
