de Bridsale (Birdsall), Joan

Robert previously put her in possession, on the orders of Earl Warenne, only to expel her again. She requests a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
She is to sue in Chancery at common law.
Places mentioned
Hexthorpe, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Doncaster, [West Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Gilbert de Bridsale (Birdsall), formerly chamberlain of Robert de Mauley
Robert de Maule (Mauley) the elder
Robert de Maule (Mauley) the younger
[John de Warenne], Earl Warenne (Earl of Surrey).
Note
No reason is given for the dating on the guard: '?? 1335': although, as John Warenne, Earl of Surrey, died in 1347, and his line became extinct, it is unlikely to date to too long after that. There are various references to people who might be those referred to in the petition in the patent and close rolls:CPR 1327-1330 pp.128-129 (dated at York, 27 June 1327), mentions the Maule/Maulay/de Malo Lacu family in connection with the manor of Hexthorpe, and at this point it is held by a Robert de Malo Lacu.CPR 1327-1330 p.164 (Nottingham, 5 September 1327) is a licence for Peter de Malo Lacu, who holds the reversion of Hexthorpe after the death of Robert, to grant a life estate to another Robert, son of the first one. These might be the elder and younger Roberts mentioned in the petition.CPR 1330-4 p. 369 (York, 7 November 1332) is a licence for Peter to grant to Peter his son the reversion of Hexthorpe after the death of Robert.CPR 1348-1350 p.99 (Westminster, 23 May 1348) is a licence for Peter de Mauleye 'le quart' to enfeoff Robert de Mauleye of a number of manors including Hexthorpe. Finally CCR 1360-4 p.211 (Beaulieu, 30 September 1361), an order to the escheator to remove the king's hand from Hexthorpe and other manors if Margaret, widow of Peter de Malo Lacu the fifth, finds sufficient security, rehearses the whole history of the seisin, mentioning three Peters and two Roberts. So the date of 1335 does not look impossible, but it would still be nice to know what lies behind it.As for Gilbert de Bridsale, a person of that name is mentioned in CPR 1334-1338 p.99 (Clipstone, 1 May 1334) and p. 141 (Nottingham, 1 April 1335), but the dates make it unlikely that he is the late husband of the petitioner. A Gilbert de Briddeshale, deceased, is mentioned in CCR 1364-1368 p.402 (Westminster, 4 December 1367), but this is probably too late for our purposes.
