Description
Petitioners
Henry Wygein (Wigan).
Name(s)
Wygein (Wigan), Henry
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Henry Wygein, who was with the late Earl of Lancaster, states that the Earl gave him the chapel of St Margaret in Cowlinge by his charter, which he held peacefully until the Earl was captured at Boroughbridge and taken to Pontefract, where he died, when John de Chisenale had him arrested because he was with the Earl, and by force, threat of imprisonment and other menaces, made him resign the chapel against his will, and against good faith and reason. And through a false suggestion on John's part, that it was merely an exchange, the father of the present king gave him the chapel. Henry requests the chapel, as his only fault was being one of the Earl's clerks.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show his charter in Chancery, and this petition is to be sent by writ to the Justices of the King's Bench, so that, when they have called John de Chisenale before them, and heard the arguments on one side and the other, they are to do right.
