Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/16/790
Date
[1322-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Luke de Colleville (Coleville), parson of the church of Danby Wiske.
Name(s)
de Colleville (Coleville), Luke
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
parson of the church of Danby Wiske
Nature of request
Luke de Colleville, parson of the church of Danby Wiske states that aids were granted to the late King Edward in the twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth years of his reign, and that the abbots of Furness and Jervaulx were appointed to collect them, and levied from his church the sum owed by it. Now they demand it again from Luke, by colour of arrears, to his great impoverishment, and contrary to justice and reason. He requests some remedy by which the collectors may be charged and he acquitted, as he is the fourth parson there has been in this church since the grants were made, all the executors of John de Kyrkeby, the parson at the time, are dead, and he cannot find the acquittances for the said payments because of the length of time passed.
Nature of endorsement
He is to sue at the Exchequer before the Treasurer and Barons.
Places mentioned
Daneby sur Wysk (Danby Wiske), [North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Abbot of Furness
Abbot of Jervaulx
John de Kyrkeby (Kirkby), former parson of the church of Danby Wiske.
Note
This clearly dates from the reign of Edward II, from the references to the twenty-fourth, twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth years of the late king's reign, and from the French endorsement, and the fact that the petitioner is the fourth parson since the grant was made, it must date from well into that reign. So it has been given a tentative terminus a quo of 1322, and a definite terminus ante quem of 1327.
