Nature of request
Robert de Cliderhou, parson of the church of Wigan, makes two requests:1) He states that, because he found an armed horseman for the Earl of Lancaster when he went to war against the 'poison' which surrounded the king, which he was obliged to do for his lands, and because he prayed for the Earl of Lancaster, and the other earls, that God would give them grace to uphold the crown and the peace of the land, Robert de Malberthorp, John de Stonore, Harvey de Stanton and Robert de Aylleston, arraigned him before them, imprisoned him, took him with them to Nottingham, and made him pay 300 marks of redemption there. He sold his land and paid 200 marks to the Exchequer, 30 marks for the Queen's gold, and 100 marks to Robert de Leyburn, formerly sheriff of Lancashire, who is now dead. He has a tally for this last sum, but has not yet been paid at the Exchequer. He requests a remedy, as he has done nothing wrong.2) Although King Henry, great-grandfather of the present king, granted to John Mauncel, formerly parson of his church, two fairs a year, and a market every Monday, with the customs appertaining to a fair and market, from which Robert receives toll ,and amercements of the assize of bread and ale, the burgesses of the town, who are all his tenants, flout this, buying and selling among themselves, and taking toll and amercements without a warrant, in prejudice of him and his church. Note
From the reference to 'le Roi Henry, besael le roi qore est', this petition would seem to be from the reign of Edward III - probably from early in that reign. The petition is dated to 'c. 1327 seq. cf. List of Sheriffs' by a note on the guard. CCR 1330-3 p.576 shows that the petitioner was still parson of Wigan church on 8 July 1332.Robert de Leyburn was sheriff of Lancashire from 13 March 1322 to 10 February 1323 and from 12 March 1326 to 3 January 1327.
