SC 8/16/784
Date
[c. 1328 - c. 1334]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Tavistock.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot of convent of Tavistock state that the king's father granted the stannary of Devon, together with the River Dart, to them for the term of ten years, paying £100 annually in the Exchequer, by the hands of the sheriff of the county, Roger Rodde, formerly sheriff, levied £96 13s. 4d. of that sum, during a vacancy, making an acquittance for this with the seal of his office, and paid this money to the Exchequer in his own name, not in that of the prior and convent. The same money is now demanded of the abbot, He requests a writ to the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer that they examine Roger's acquittances and payment, and discharge him of this debt.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer are to be ordered that, when they have examined the account of the said sheriff, if they find that he has paid the money for the prior and convent, they are to discharge the abbot, and if they find that he has paid the money for himself, then they are to summon him, or his heir or terre-tenants, to answer to the abbot as to why they have not acquitted him, and justice is further to be done.
Places mentioned
Tavistock, [Devon]
Ewe de Dertmue (River Dart), [Devon].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Roger Rodde, sheriff of Devon.
Note
According to the List of Sheriffs, Roger Rodde was sheriff of Devon between 15 February and 2 March 1327, but accounted from February to Michaelmas.A note on the guard of the petition dates it to 'c. 1328, cf. List of Sheriffs, prob. bef. 1334, cf. Pat. R. p. 592' There seems to be nothing relevant in CPR 1330-4 or CPR 1327-30 on this page: in both cases it is part of the index. The reference might be to the election of a new abbot at about this time (licence to elect, 22 November 1333, CPR 1330-4 p.483; order for restitution of temporalities to the new abbot 13 March 1334, CPR 1330-4 p.524). But the petition might be quite a lot later, as provision seems to be being made for the sheriff being dead.
