Nature of request
The people of Holkham, Burnham Overy, Burnham Norton and Holme next the Sea in Norfolk state that, although they have paid the true value of the ninth for these places, John de Houton and Edmund de Grymesby, who have a commission to inquire by whom the money from the ninth in Norfolk is being withheld, have charged them with the assessments for their churches for the ninths, and have imprisoned them until that money is paid; but the assessments are based on profits from the sea rather than the land, which profits from the sea have failed utterly, with the result that they will be ruined if they pay. They request a remedy.
Nature of endorsement
This petition is to be sent by writ of Chancery before the Treasurer and Barons of the Exchequer, and when the account of the levying of the ninth in the aforesaid villages has been examined, and information has been received from John de Houton and Edmund de Grymesby, who have a commission to inquire into the ninth in the same county, and when the people of the villages, and other people who should be called on this matter have been called, justice and reason are to be done to the people of the aforesaid villages.
