SC 8/16/769
Date
[1326-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Thomas Maudyt (Mauduit), son of William Mauduit of Warminster.
Name(s)
Maudyt (Mauduit), Thomas
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Thomas, son of William Maudyt states that he was seised of six cartloads of firewood annually in the wood of Selwood, belonging to the manor of Warminster, which once belonged to Thomas Maudyt, and which the king gave to Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester; but Hugh le Despenser has prevented him from taking them for the last five years. He requests that he might have it back, and a remedy for the damages he has suffered because of this.
Nature of endorsement
When he has the manor, he is to have the profit which belongs to it.
Places mentioned
Selewode (Selwood) forest, Wiltshire
Warminster, Wiltshire.
People mentioned
William Maudyt (Mauduit)
Thomas Maudyt (Mauduit)
Hugh le Despenser, Earl of Winchester.
Note
CFR 1327-37 p.28 is dated at Westminster, 14 March 1327, CCR 1327-30 p.16 is dated at Westminster 12 March 1327, and CPR 1327-30 p6 is dated at Westminster, 6 February 1327: Thomas Maudyt is clearly dead by the beginning of February. But the endorsement suggests that the manor is no longer in the hands of Hugh le Despenser, indeed that it is envisaged that it will be returned to Thomas Maudyt, which means that this petition must have been delivered and answered in the very narrow period between the fall of the Despensers late in 1326 and the beginning of 1327. The language, 'nostre seignur le roy' suggests that Edward II is still king: but petitions clearly delivered to Edward III's first parliament use similar language.CPR 1321-4 pp.189-90 is dated at York, 20 July 1322, but CCR 1318-23 p.636-7, dated at the Tower, 12 April 1323, suggests that the whole manor is not in Despenser's hand, but that Thomas Maudyt still has lands etc. there.
