Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Glastonbury.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent of Glastonbury request that during vacancies in their abbey the prior and convent might have the keeping of the temporalities of the abbey, paying the king a certain sum according to the length of the vacancy, just as the late king granted to other religious, as in times of vacancy they have been greatly impoverished by the actions of the ministers who have had the custody, and the king has had no profit.
Nature of endorsement
The Treasurer and Barons etc. are to be ordered to search their records for how much kings have previously been answered in times of vacancy in the house, whether by fine or otherwise, and for what time, and how; and they are to inquire whether anything has been acquired for the house since the last vacancy for which the king has not been answered. The king is to be informed of all this, and then a charter is to be granted to them for a reasonable fine.
